The Greensicle

Growing up in Montreal, there was a spot on the edge of the city that I thought was magical – shaped like a giant orange, it was called “Orange Julius” (said with a heavy Quebecois accent, please). It was, like, the best drive in for kids, where my dad would pull up and order us steamy hot dogs, fries smothered in gravy with cheese (soon to be discovered as a delicacy the world over) and the most incredible Orange Smoothie drink. Later in life, I would find out that Orange Julius was a chain restaurant and wasn’t unique to me and my childhood, but this was after my healthy lifestyle had kicked in so it didn’t hurt so bad.

Nostalgia is best served cold – just like this fantastic adaptation of the original orange julius (that, incidentally, was so delicious because it was jammed full of sugar). This green smoothie tastes great with coconut water or coconut milk, but also works with almond milk or even just water. The avocado adds a layer of creaminess. Definitely add the orange zest – it is worth it.

Smoothie Ingredients

    • 2 cups of chopped spinach
    • ½ banana
    • 1 orange – zested, then peeled and chopped up.
    • 2 cups coconut water, or 1 cup light coconut milk and 1 cup water, or 2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk or water.
    • 1 lime, juiced
    • 1/2 avocado, diced or several pieces of frozen avocado.
    • 1 tbsp  chia seed.
    • 3-4 ice cubes.

Instructions

Blend all ingredients together in a Vitamix for over a minute until well blended. Enjoy!
